For the second time we are going to meet and exchange our knowledge about Outdoor Education and the ways that educators can use it as a teaching tool.
Being in the wonderful location of Hopeland, among mountains and historical places, we are going to be taught Outdoor Education principles, putting our hands in the soil and gain firsthand experience of teaching with this method by becoming students ourselves, combining scientific research with practice.
Interpreting what the landscape has to offer as teaching material, we are going to spend some days in nature, working in groups, discussing about our own experiences, giving feedback and suggestions for further use of the activities, and at the end of the day, reflecting around the table, enjoying our company and building relationship. Local, homemade food and wine will ensure that this experience will be even more extraordinary, we promise!
This year the 4-day seminar with the pedagogical theme will be followed by a 3-day extended touristic part for those who will join us from abroad. They will have the opportunity to enjoy more recreational time, hike, swim, travel around in the greater area and visit exceptional places of the Hellenic cultural and historical importance, amidst wonderful natural beauty.
Roughly speaking, “Outdoor education” is a pedagogical approach and interdisciplinary methodology that aims at offering learning in environments outside the traditional “classroom”. Through the interplay between experience and reflection, O.E. would be a complement to the traditional teaching methods thus emphasizing that experiences in the natural environment that surrounds us can form a base for learning. Rendering global and local cycles visible to human societies is a key concept promoting human responsibility in matters of health, citizenship and sustainability.
The pedagogical part of the seminar will be held throughout 4 days (3 nights).
Cost of participation:
The cost of the pedagogical part of the seminar (250 euros) includes:
• Accommodation in Hopeland’s shelter (common) straw-bale house and full board.
• Didactic theory.
• Practical workshops and group activities relative to the methodology at hand.
• The field trip to the archeological site of Mycenae (guided tour)
• Seminar attendance certification
The cost of the pedagogical and touristic package (720 euros) includes:
• All services mentioned above as well as:
• Visit to a local winery
• Trip to the ancient theater of Epidaurus
• Trip to Methana’s peninsula
• Trip to the old city of Nafplion
The field trips will be guided by experienced and professional guides.

The cost of the pedagogical part will be 200 instead of 250 euros, as well as the cost for the pedagogical and the touristic part will be 650 instead of 720 euros!

My first academic studies were Sociology and Statistics but I was already at that time interested in teaching and learning. So in order to find out if I would like to become a teacher I worked as a substitute teacher some years and after that I was convinced that teaching is absolutely the most interesting and rewarding job you can ever find.I graduated as a Primary School Teacher with Swedish and Swedish as a second language as majors. After my graduation I got employed as a secondary school teacher and I continued to study language and language learning for some more years.
After some years as a teacher I decided to combine my to main interests, Language and Outdoor Life and I applied for the Master’s program in Outdoor Education at Linköping University and after my graduation from the program I was employed as a lecturer in the National Center for Outdoor Education at Linköping University. I continued to work there for almost eleven years and most of the time I was responible for our master’s program. During these years I tried hard to convince people that language learning can be done in the Outdoors and with brilliant results too. Traditionally it has been more focus on Mathematics and Natural Science in the field of Outdoor Leerning, but today there are a lot of scientific evidences of succsessful language learning by using Outdoor Learning methods.
During this time I also took part in a number projects faciliated by the European Union. The last one was focused on earning and Integration by nature and cultural encounters (LINC). This projec was a great success and the result was a lot of useful ideas and exercises that can be used for different kinds of learning and integration in schools and in volontary work with newly arrived immigrants.
Today I am part time retired but I still give lectures and workshops and I am happy to be able to inspire and educate teachers and other groups, interested in this field. It is always wounderful to meet engaged people and share knowledge and experiences.
Upon finishing her university studies in University of Thessaly’s “Department of Special Education” (2009) Anna immersed herself into the educational matter as a special pedagogue. Four years of work in special education in different schools in Greece were followed by studies in Sweden.
By obtaining her Master’s degree through Linköping University’s Master in "Outdoor Education and Outdoor Life" program in 2014, Anna got the chance to encompass in her academic perspective her passion for handicrafts. There was already an interest for the role of handicrafts as part of a reformed educational system based on more natural models. At that point a new perspective was born; that of further researching on the subject matter.
Honoring this perspective, she will be glad to cultivate, among others, what the Outdoor Educational methodology is inspiring, along with fellow educators and participants in this seminar. At the moment Anna is working in a Swedish school and attends an educational program on textile crafts.
Just 150 km south of Athens, Elpidohori can serve as a base for daytrips and excursions in the greater area, due to its very privileged location.
In a radius of 20km you will find many sites of vast historical importance and natural beauty like:
-The fully functional ancient theatre of Epidaurus with its incredible acoustics. It seats 15,000 and holds a festival each summer. More here Epidaurus
